This miracle is from Kathryn, with documentation from her cousin Diane about their Grandmother…
In October of 1960, my maternal grandmother was involved in a minor car accident. She was taken to a nearby hospital, because her back hurt. The emergency room doctor ordered X-rays. When the films were studied, it appeared that she had bone cancer! Since imaging technology was limited in her North Dakota town back in those days, the local hospital consulted the Mayo Clinic.
The Clinic’s prognosis stated that the cancer may have spread to her spine with the source most likely being a kidney. Grandma was transferred to Mercy Hospital in Williston ND closer to home as soon as she was stabilized. A note found from the time says “cancer cells in bone marrow. 8-10 weeks to a few months.”
She had been in the hospital for 8-10 weeks. The family saw her sinking and the medical report of four doctors now reported that it was bone cancer and she wouldn’t live. My Mom even got a letter from her priest, Fr. Al saying her Mom would be “in Heaven” with her Dad at Christmas. This quote is from one of Grandma’s letters from the time…
I’m so glad I got hurt and none of the rest. I put everything in God’s & the Blessed mother’s hands so I am bound to get well. Have communion every morning.”
Grandma and one of the nurses attending her had a great devotion to the Sacred Heart. When she heard the diagnosis, she blessed my grandma with Lourdes water. Lourdes is a site in France from which many miracles spring forth.
My Grandma hadn’t eaten much since being admitted to the hospital. The next morning when she woke up she called quite loudly, untypical for her, even when she felt great, “I’d like some bacon please!” She was released several days later with no signs of cancer at all. She lived another 17 years on earth.
My Mom, members of my family, and I believe this was a miracle. Many years later Grandma had a simple mastectomy for a postmenopausal breast cancer and survived that just fine.
